The "E" Word

Americans everywhere are sharing their views on the marriage equality issue and rightly so.  It's an issue where peoples' beliefs, emotions, and lives are involved. But what I find interesting is that while many Americans are clamoring for equal rights, there's one issue that seems to not receive as much outcry.  I doubt many people even know about this, which I found posted on Fox News:
"The war on Easter has begun! The principal of Heritage Elementary School in Madison, Alabama has banned the use of the word Easter in the school saying that it infringes on the rights of students."

Am I only one who finds this a complete violation of equal rights?  Here was my immediate response:  "Uh, if she doesn't want me using the "E" word, I'll just go back to calling it Resurrection Sunday like the early church called it before eggs and bunnies and candy somehow got involved.  See how she feels about that."

Definitely not a very loving response, but don't we all have the right to tell people what religious holiday we happen to celebrate?

What are your thoughts?

  1. I like the comment at the end where the guy says why not celebrate all the holidays but that sort of got lost amidst the livid woman's very strident views!

I think it's more inclusive if all important days of the religious faiths in that school are celebrated and explained to all the children so that they understand the significance of these special days. It's very interesting though that the teacher at the centre of this Fox storm is only given 2 seconds to defend herself.

Anyway! Have a fabulous Easter weekend, lovely Jenn! Take care

    1. Old Kitty, that is an excellent point about the principal being able to defend herself. News oftentimes seems to be slanted one way or the other, which is very sad.

I agree, it would be more inclusive if all religious holidays were explained to students, but parents would be upset about their child learning about a different faith. Such a difficult issue!

  2. I believe that we can't let anybody in this country bully us into being silent about the gospel, which is precisely what Easter is all about. I agree, say Resurrection Day. ;-) When the disciples were beaten and told not to preach anymore, they kept right on preaching. Happy Easter, Jenn! Blessings to you!
