Revisioning

Yes, that's the term we should be using.  Every time we revise our stories, we're creating a new vision for it.  Revisioning.  Sounds so much better than editing and revising.

Because, to be honest, I'm tired of editing and revising.  But my story has been through more revisionings than I can count.  I've been working on this thing for four years now.  But, with every revisioning it gets stronger.  The pace gets tighter.  The characters get deeper.  The theme gets more embedded throughout.

I can't tell you the number of times I've said "just one more run-through of revisions and then it'll be done."   I can't tell you the number of times I've said "I"ll be done by x month" and then 'x month' comes and goes and I'm still happily revising revisioning, but disappointed I've missed my deadline.

  1. I can so relate to this, on both the multiple revisions and the "I'll be done by" self imposed deadlines. Trouble is, after pu lishing the deadlines are real, even if they're nothing more than readers aski.g when the next book will be out- which is a great motivator! Good luck on your revisions!

  3. Jennette, thanks for that reminder. I think my point was that I want to enjoy the process and not get frustrated with myself for not being done simply because I have an idea to strengthen my story. But you are so right, I will have to get used to deadlines if I ever do get this thing published. :)

  4. I can relate. My MS has been through a lot of revisions, and this weekend, as a writing friend and I worked on the synopsis, I found three more that needed to be done. It seemed like a never ending process, doesn't it? Good luck!

  5. I love the idea of calling it "revisioning." I'm in the middle of revisioning my WIP and I can see how it's getting stronger bit by bit. Good luck with your book!

  6. Yep, been there, done that, and still doing it. ;) I've decided it's not 100% up to me when my novel is done. It's mostly my novel's decision (and part my decision too, gotta be realistic). Happy revisioning. :)
